Dear Friends and Neighbors:
Pacolet is full of promise. Why, because we share a spirit of caring
for one another that creates an atmosphere for healthy living. Often
my heart is warmed, when I experience or hear about what is
happening in our churches, schools, The Closet of Grace, recreation
center, local health care agencies, civic clubs, police, fire,
rescue, and street and sanitation departments. Our commitment to the
Pacolet community is expressed through our community covenant. A
promise that states we will care for each
other and our natural resources. As we enact this covenant, we
provide sustainability for future generations (See Support of
Community Services).
Our Community Master Plan, developed in August 2004, made us more
aware of what makes our community far from ordinary. When traveling
around Pacolet take a moment to observe nature’s blessings entrusted
to us…the river, the green spaces, the open pastureland, and the
rock quarry. As good stewards of these treasurers, we must seek to
protect them. Two citizen committees have been established to assist
with implementation of our master plan. The committees are Rhonda
Kirby, Chairperson-River/ Bridge Beautification and Chris Harris,
Chairperson-Cloth Room Market Revitalization.

Healthy communities require effort and commitment. I believe
there is much effort and commitment taking place here. Pacolet was
selected as one of eight communities in Spartanburg County to
participate in the 2005 Walkable Community Workshops. These
workshops were designed to develop solutions that would make it
easier, safer and more appealing to walk to businesses, schools,
parks and other community destinations. Our community focus was how
to enter the proposed nature based educational trail that will link
the areas along the river to the central businesses. Two national
walkable community experts met in Pacolet along with leaders from
Pacolet and Spartanburg County. During the workshop, we experienced
a memorable moment. “Little Bear”, a Catawba Indian, met the group
at the entrance to the proposed trail greeting us in his Native
American language. “Little Bear” and our walkable experts were
immediately immersed in conversation...one walking expert to
another. The workshop was a success! Most visitors to Pacolet
encounter at least one memorable moment. While working to provide
opportunities for our community, we as a Council have developed new
short and long range goals that support our Community Master Plan.
Several grants have been acquired to help accomplish these goals: SC
Urban Forestry Commission, SPATS Enhancement Grant, Spartanburg Arts
Partnership, Mary Black Foundation, Parks-Recreation and Tourism.
Do you believe in miracles? Like many of you, I do. Webster
defines a miracle as a wonderful thing. Many wonderful things have
happened in Pacolet. I believe many more wonderful things are to
come.
May God bless you,

Elaine Harris, Mayor
